Preparing the Next Generation of
Cybersecurity Professionals

Overview
As one of Canada's leading polytechnic institutions, SAIT has built its reputation on delivering applied
education that prepares students for successful careers through hands-on learning and strong industry
partnerships. As cybersecurity threats continue to evolve, SAIT recognized the need to move beyond
traditional classroom instruction and create an environment where students could experience the realities of
defending modern digital infrastructure.
Working with Matrix Video Communications Corp. (MVCC), SAIT developed its Downtown Cyber Range, a
state-of-the-art immersive learning environment designed to simulate real-world cybersecurity incidents and
provide students with practical, industry-relevant experience.

The Challenge
SAIT wanted to create an innovative learning space that would better prepare students for the rapidly changing cybersecurity landscape while supporting its commitment to experiential learning.
The project presented several unique challenges:

Creating Realistic Learning Experiences: Traditional
classroom environments could not adequately replicate the complexity and pressure of real cybersecurity incidents. -
Implementing New Technology: The Cyber Range
represented a new type of learning environment for SAIT, involving technology and system integration on a scale the institution had not previously undertaken. -
Managing Project Complexity: With many unknowns
throughout the implementation, the project required flexibility, collaboration, and several mid-project adjustments as the vision evolved.
The goal was to develop an immersive platform where students could actively defend systems, investigate cyber incidents, and collaborate in simulated operational environments that closely mirror those found in industry.​

The Solution
At the heart of the space is the Barco CTRL ecosystem, which serves as the centralized visualization and source management platform. The system securely distributes video, data, and applications throughout the Cyber Range, allowing operators to dynamically share information, collaborate in real time, and manage multiple content sources from a single interface.

Supporting the command centre are four 98-inch Sony BRAVIA Professional 4K displays, forming a large format video wall capable of presenting cyber threat dashboards, live monitoring feeds, incident response tools, and instructional content simultaneously. This gives students a realistic command centre environment that closely mirrors professional security operations centres.

To simplify operation of the room, Matrix integrated a Crestron control system that provides centralized management of the displays, audio systems, cameras, lighting, and source routing. Instructors can control the entire environment using wall-mounted, tabletop, or wireless touch panels, allowing the room to adapt quickly to different learning scenarios.

The Cyber Range also features a professional-grade audiovisual infrastructure designed to support both in person and hybrid learning. A Biamp Tesira digital signal processor, paired with Shure wireless conference microphones, Sennheiser TeamConnect Ceiling microphones, Crestron amplification, and ceiling speakers, delivers clear, intelligible audio throughout the space. A Crestron 1 Beyond intelligent PTZ camera and Magewell capture technology support lecture capture, remote participation, and live streaming.

To encourage collaboration, the room includes Extron ShareLink Pro wireless presentation technology, allowing instructors and students to share 4K content directly into the Barco CTRL environment and video wall. Behind the scenes, a dedicated control room equipped with additional Barco encoders, monitoring systems, and audio interfaces enables instructors and administrators to oversee Cyber Range activities independently from the main command centre.

The entire solution is supported by an enterprise-grade network infrastructure, providing secure connectivity for audiovisual systems, Dante audio networking, Crestron control, cameras, and presentation technologies while maintaining the flexibility to expand as the Cyber Range evolves.
Implementation Process
Delivering the Cyber Range required close collaboration between SAIT and MVCC throughout the design, integration, and commissioning phases.

Because the project combined command-and-control visualization, enterprise audiovisual systems, cybersecurity simulation, and collaborative learning technologies, several design refinements were made throughout implementation to ensure the finished environment aligned with SAIT's evolving vision.

One of the project's most significant milestones was successfully commissioning the Barco CTRL platform and immersive command centre, providing students with a professional-grade environment capable of supporting complex cybersecurity simulations. The completed system now supports more than 50 gamified training scenarios, with additional custom exercises continually being developed in collaboration with industry partners.

As the Cyber Range continues to evolve, the flexible architecture allows new scenarios, technologies, and visualization tools to be incorporated without requiring significant changes to the underlying infrastructure.

Regarding the partnership, SAIT shared:
"SAIT has an excellent working relationship with Matrix. There were the usual challenges, such as scheduling,
planning and communication that are typical with complex projects, but overall, everything was satisfactory."
Results & Impact

Today, the SAIT Downtown Cyber Range provides students with an immersive learning environment that closely replicates the workflows and decision-making processes found in modern security operations centres.

The combination of the Barco CTRL command-and-control platform, enterprise-grade visualization systems, integrated audiovisual technologies, and collaborative learning tools allows students to participate in realistic cyber attack and defence scenarios while developing the technical, analytical, and communication skills required in today's cybersecurity industry.

Faculty benefit from a highly flexible teaching environment that can be adapted to emerging threats through custom scenario development, while industry partners have the opportunity to collaborate with SAIT on creating relevant, real-world training experiences.
