An Upgraded Video Production System

The Scotiabank Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia is the biggest multi-purpose facility in Atlantic Canada. It was first established in 1978, and it now has over 10,500 seats, including Skyboxes, premium seating lounges, and executive suites. The facility is also fully accessible to people with disabilities. Multiple sports, such as hockey, basketball, and lacrosse, can be played in this facility. In fact, it is home to the Halifax Mooseheads, the Halifax Hurricanes, and the Halifax Thunderbirds. The Scotiabank Centre is also used to host a variety of live events, including concerts, motorsport events, and speeches.

THE CHALLENGE

The Scotiabank Centre wanted to enhance their in-person fan experience. They were looking for a video production control room upgrade to ensure their fans received the best possible video throughout their event. They also wanted to make sure that this new system was compatible with their existing LED and digital signage. To find the most qualified video production experts, they sent out a request for proposals, and Matrix won!

THE SOLUTION

This project involved the design, supply, and installation of a new, upgraded video production control room. On top of integrating the entire system, we also provided some training for equipment they weren’t familiar with—mainly non-Ross products. The most challenging part of this project was that it was 4,800km away from our head office and over 2,000km away from our closest office. In the end, we overcame this challenge and delivered a cutting-edge control room designed to their exact specifications.

The components implemented in this project include the following: Ross Xpression, Ross Carbonite Ultra 3ME production switcher, Sony HXC-FB80 studio cameras with SMPTE fibre-connected camera control units, Fujinon box lenses, NewTek 3Play 4800 8-channel replay server, and Clearcom wired and wireless intercoms.

Video production starts with video creation. And for live events, video quality is crucial. For optimal video quality and reliable operation, we provided Scotiabank Centre with two Sony studio cameras and 55 Fujinon box lenses, so they could be sure to wow their audience throughout each of their events.

To enable fantastic video editing, we installed Ross Xpression, a Ross Carbonite Ultra, and a NewTek 3Play. The Ross Xpression system is used to provide real-time graphics for the scoreboard as well as the LED screens throughout the facility. With the Ross Carbonite Ultra, the Scotiabank team can seamlessly and easily switch audio and video across all screens. Meanwhile, the NewTek 3Play allows for enhanced video editing across multiple cameras, including multiple forms of video replay. Made specifically for sports, the 3Play facilitates side-by-side playback and allows for video replay at multiple speeds, providing an exceptional viewing experience for all guests.
